Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise 067I041-1 with R/V ATAIR focused on investigating the oceanographic state of the Greater North Sea in the summer of 2025. In addition to physical oceanographic observations further measurements aimed at determining the large-scale distribution regarding microplastics, trace metals, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity, water tansparency, plankton, chlorophyll and selected radionuclides in the surface layer or water column of the North Sea. In total, 4 surface drifters were deployed with the intention to reveal regional details of the oceanic current field. Like previous North Sea Summer Surveys (NSSS) of BSH, the track of cruise 067I041-1followed seven zonal coast-to-coast sections spanning the North Sea between 54? and 60?N. Additional stations were carried out at the northern entrance to the English Channel south of 54?N and northwest of the Orkney Islands. The survey followed a grid of fixed standard station locations aiming at obtaining vertical CTD profiles and water samples. Underway measurement systems served to obtain near-surface information, basically for oceanic velocity, temperature, salinity, fluorescence, turbidity, and microplastic concentrations. Water and air sampling for pesticide analysis was carried out on selected transects and stations in the northern half of the North Sea.
