Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise 067I033-1 with R/V ATAIR focused on investigating the oceanographic state of the Greater North Sea in summer 2024. Further measurements aimed at determining the large-scale distribution regarding microplastics, trace metals, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity, tritium, water tansparency, plankton and chlorophyll in the surface layer of the North Sea. In total, eight surface drifters were deployed with the intention to reveal regional details of the oceanic current field. Like previous North Sea Summer Surveys (NSSS) of BSH, the track of cruise 067I033-1followed seven zonal coast-to-coast sections spanning the North Sea between 54? and 60?N. Additional stations were carried out at the northern entrance to the English Channel south of 54?N and northwest of the Orkney Islands. The survey followed a grid of fixed standard station locations aiming at obtaining vertical CTD profiles and water samples. Underway measurement systems served to obtain near-surface information, basically for oceanic velocity, temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, turbidity, and microplastics.
