Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

As part of U Hamburg's bachelor's degree program in geophysics/oceanography, a "Berufs- und Seepraktikum" (student excursion) is carried out. The students are enabled to prepare daily cruises scientifically and logistically, to carry out various measurements, to process and analyse the data obtained, and to communicate the results through presentations and a cruise report. The excursion is complemented by a seminar, in whose frame the students define the cruise's research goals and scientific objectives, present actual results, and discuss data processing procedures. During the 2023 cruise, the area of interest was the Jade Bay on the Lower Saxonean North Sea coast. The aim of the student excursion was to investigate short term variabilities of oceanographic parameters such as temperature, salinity and currents, with particular emphysis on the exchange of water masses between the German Bight of the North Sea and the Jade Bay. During every daily cruise, CTD and ADCP measurements were performed, complemented by three additional moorings that were laid out for approx. four days at three locations.
