Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The Engineering Trial 2023 was carried out in the western Baltic Sea: The objective of the trial was the test of the following oceanographic equipment: A side scan sonar Klein 4000, a graviprobe penetrometer, two ADCPs: 300 kHz and 600 kHz, two attenuation probes WetLabs AC9-plus and WetLabs ACS, a CTD probe CTD704, a bottom lander with a camera system and a sediment trap, a gravity corer In order to study the towed depth of a side scan sonar Klein 4000 it was equiped by 3 different metal plates with weights of 12, 24 and 36 kg. Operated by a velocity of 4 kts the length of the towed cable of the sonar body has been varried between 30 m up to 90 m. Additionally the side scan sonar KLEIN 4000 was used to examine different objects at the sea bottom and differnt sea floor characteristics. Some side scan sonar tracks were completed by multibeam echo sounder R2sonic measurements. A further objective was to study water transparency and its local variability by a WetLabs AC9-plus attenuation probe and a WetLabs ACS attenuation probe in conjunction with Secchi Disks measurements. By use of a bottom lander different investigations concerning an underwater camera system, a sediment trap and an elevator plattform have been performed. Additionally a ROV Hyball was deployed to investigate sediment characteristics and obstacles occurence and train its handling. In order to analyse sea surface processes a multi sensor catamaran was towed at starboard side of RV Elisabeth Mann Borgese, Complementary to the catamaran ship vessel mounted ADCPs operated at 300 kHz and 600 kHz were tested.
