Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The cruise was part of the educational Master programme of Marine Biology at the University of Rostock conducted by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW). Modern oceanography increasingly combines analyses of diverse research data with experimental studies in the field or the laboratory to foster the understanding of complex biogeochemical and ecological processes. In this context, the educational cruise aimed at practical experience in biological oceanography onboard RV Elisabeth Mann Borgese (EMB). In a combination of fieldwork, experimental projects and lectures, students were introduced into current research topics and received hands-on training in observational methods and techniques of hydrographical, chemical and biological sampling and analysis. The fieldwork was carried out on a cruise track from the Bornholm Basin to the Kiel Bight in order to explore the changing environmental conditions from a brackish system into marine influenced system. The hydrographical situation reflected largely the expected changes with an increase in surface water salinity, a relatively constant surface temperature and increasing nutrient availability. Chla concentrations fluctuated between 0.9 and 3.5 mg Chla m-3 and displayed no trend with regard to the investigated areas. The phyto- and zooplankton composition showed a typical change in composition with a shift from a cyanobacteria dominated community in the Baltic Proper to a dominance of flagellates and diatoms in the Kiel Bight. Zooplankton diversity increased in brackish water due to the presence of diverse marine copepods and cladocerans in the Baltic Proper, while the Belt Sea was strongly dominated by two genera, Acartia spp and Oithona spp. In addition to the biographic analyses of the community composition, diverse experiments were done to investigate the role of the germination of phytoplankton resting spores and emergence of nauplii from resting eggs in the recruitment of phyto- and zooplankton.
