Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The cruise EMB316 was carried out in Spring 2023 to investigate the basin-wide eddy structure in the Eastern Gotland Basin of the Baltic Sea. This persistent dynamic eddy is of particular importance for the understanding of the Baltic thermohaline circulation and is so far insufficiently simulated by numerical models. To gain information about the basin scale and mesoscale dynamics of the Eastern Gotland Basin a high-resolution dataset of basin-wide hydrography was gathered using a towed CTD (ScanFish) and moored instrumentation. At all 10 ScanFish transects were performed with at transect to transect distance in the magnitude of the internal Rossby radius. Additionally, CTD stations were performed in the deep part of the basin, that was not covered with the ScanFish. In the Gotland deep the GODESS mooring was deployed for the time of the cruise to obtain hourly hydrographic profiles. The gathered in-situ data will be combined with novel 2d sea surface topography (SSH) data of the NASA SWOT mission. First preliminary SSH data were provided by the SWOT science team during the cruise. The combination of both data sets after the cruise will lead to better understand of existing data from long-term moorings and to derive climate-relevant information about the long-term variability of the circulation in the eastern Gotland Basin. During the expedition also few CTD station were worked along the transit between Rostock and the EGB. These data contribute to the long-term observation program of the IOW, and to validation and further development of numerical models.
