Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The expedition aimed at deepening our understanding of ship aerosol composition and transformation during transport from the ship smokestack to the water column. The scientific work was therefore mainly carried out in proximity to one of the busiest waterways worldwide, the "Kadetrinne" in the southwestern Baltic Sea. In detail, dispersal of ship plume aerosols in the atmosphere and chemical characterization of the aerosols in the atmosphere were analyzed via online analytical measurements. Additionally, respective atmospheric and water/filter samples were obtained for later analysis in the home laboratories. Weather conditions were challenging with prevailing northeasterly winds during the time of the cruise at the beginning of April of 2023. Nevertheless, atmospheric dispersal of the exhaust plumes could be characterized through deployment of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) performing online measurements and in-flight-aerosol collection during three days that allowed for flying. Online-characterization of ship exhaust plumes could successfully be conducted via onboard air sampling systems over the duration of the cruise and was complemented by measurements and sampling conducted from the working boat near to the sea surface level. Water sampling was conducted using CTD deployments, and sampling of the sea surface microlayer and underlying water from the research vessel's working boat.
