Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

For both 2-day cruises following similar procedure was planned. After the arrival and Corona test of the students, departure of the RV Elisabeth Mann Borghese EMB was scheduled for 07:30 AM. On March 7th, however, departure was not possible because of stormy weather conditions in Mecklenburg Bay, and departure was postponed to the second day for the first group of students. During the first day of stay in the port of Rostock-Marienehe safety instruction was given to the student and brief lectures regarding research cruise planning, regional geology, and the theory of the used geophysical and geological sampling equipment were given, followed by a brief tour to the various components of the ship, such as laboratories and the bridge. An overview of the history and development of the Baltic Sea was presented by Prof. Arz. Dr. Peter Feldens introduced the use of geoacoustic exploration devices, demonstrating the application of a side-scan sonar and sediment echo sounder. Later that day, sediment cores from last year?s expedition EMB287 were examined. At 7:00 am on the 8th, the ship was eventually able to set course on the Baltic Sea, where profiling measurements into the central part of Mecklenburg Bay and sediment sampling (Van Veen grab, multicorer, gravity corer) were conducted and the ship returned to RostockMarienehe. On the evening of 8 March, a second group of eight students boarded the FS Elisabeth Mann Borgese (EMB). At the beginning, they all had to take a corona test. On the morning of 9 March, the scientists from the IOW came on board. At 8 a.m. local time, the EMB left the harbor in Rostock. At 9:40 we reached the first station. The work started with a profile recording with the Sidescan sonar (SSS) at a water depth of 13m. The SSS data was used to identify a station for sampling with the MUC. After the MUC, a sample was taken with the Frahm-corer at the same location. Along the profile, another gravity corer was taken at a depth of 27m. At half past three, the work on deck was over for the day. In the afternoon and evening, the core description followed. The EMB stayed off the coast of Kuhlungsborn for the night. On 10 March the FS EMB returned to the area and at 7.30 a.m. sampling with the Grab Sampler continued. Samples were taken from 27m, 28m and two samples from 16m depth. Afterwards, an underwater video was attempted, which had to be canceled due to the increasingly windy weather. In the end, two more samples were taken with the grab sampler and box corer at 13m depth. At 9.30am the box corer was back on board and the work was finished for the trip. Afterwards, core processing continued and work was concluded with cleaning the deck and the laboratories. At noon, the FS EMB arrived at the port of Rostock, having successfully completed cruise EMB313.
