Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

After leaving Bremerhaven, the first working area in the Natura 2000 site 'Dogger Bank' was approached to sample the biotope type 'sandbanks' (LRT 1110) at 15 stations on the bank as well as at 10 stations on its northern slope as part of the FFH monitoring. After completing the work in this area, the trip continued to the working area in the north-western central German Bight, where 35 stations were sampled as part of the MSFD monitoring for the broad habitat type of 'offshore circalittoral sands'. Subsequently, the working area in the Natura 2000 area of the Sylt Outer Reef was approached. Here, a total of 50 stations were sampled as part of an effect study on the effectiveness of management measures to exclude bottom trawling, using van Veen grabs, epibenthos dredge, towed underwater camera and, if necessary, CTD rosette. Due to heavy seas, the towed underwater video system could not be used for 3 days. After finishing all further work in this area, the concerned stations were therefore approached again and the video recordings were made up for. Afterwards, the last working area in the central German Bight southwest of the Sylt Outer Reef was approached in order to sample another 40 stations for the broad habitat type of 'offshore circalittoral sands' within the framework of the MSFD monitoring. An isolated case of COVID19 infection among the ship's crew made it necessary to isolate the captain on board. This was compensated for by the well-organised and well-rehearsed crew through flexible work tasks and times. A failure of the on-board fibreoptic winch was compensated by a cable brought along for the AWI underwater video system. All planned work for all stations could therefore be carried out successfully.
