Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The RV HEINCKE was loaded as scheduled on the afternoon of 05 June at Fischkai in Bremerhaven by the participants of the voyage from GEOMAR, ICBM and AWI. In best summer weather the departure started on the following day (06.06. 2023) punctually at 8:00 am. Afterwards, stations for sampling water and sediment in the Weser estuary were approached. HEINCKE then set course for the Borkum Riffgrund sea area, taking additional water and sediment samples every 5-6 nautical miles along the way. In between, several fish hauls were made around the suspected munitions area north of Spiekeroog, catching dab to study biological effects and dissecting them on board. In addition, the area was mapped in high resolution by GEOMAR colleagues using a scanfish. Furthermore, HEINCKE stopped at the wreck of the V812 north of the island of Norderney. Here, current measurements with the onboard ADCP were carried out by the colleague from ICBM. South of the sea area Borkum Riffgrund, a reference area for fishing was defined and fished and also mapped with the Scanfish. HEINCKE then followed the station plan for water and sediment samples back to the central German Bight. Along the way, current measurements were taken around backwater at another three wrecks (VIGO, SMS ARIADNE and SMS MAINZ). Midway through the voyage on June 12, it was decided to conduct the crew exchange not in Cuxhaven as planned, but in Bremerhaven, since the onboard -80?C freezer failed and only at AWI was there sufficient freezer capacity for the samples already taken. After securing the samples and the crew exchange, HEINCKE departed again in the afternoon towards the river Elbe entrance. There, in the morning of June 13, the next transect for water and sediment samples started as planned. HEINCKE then steamed north towards the island of Sylt. West of Sylt another dumping area was fished and mapped before HEINCKE headed south again to the sea area around Helgoland. Fishing at the planned sampling areas "Steingrund" and "Tiefe Rinne" near Helgoland was refrained from after a net hook at Steingrund and the presence of many poorly marked crab traps in the Tiefe Rinne area. Mapping of the southern part of the Tiefe Rinne was also discontinued due to countless of the crab traps. After the failure of the two fishing stations, an additional transect was sampled for water and sediment north of Helgoland before HEINCKE set course again for Bremerhaven. In the afternoon of 19.06. HEINCKE arrived in Bremerhaven.
