Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The research cruise HE 619 serves two purposes: The main focus is to train master students of the Universitat Hamburg for marine research on a research vessel. This training cruise has been part of the curriculum in the geology course at the Universitat Hamburg since 2006 as a practical exercise for students in the master's course (lecture number 63-345). The objectives of this master's course are (1) to learn ship-based procedures at sea, (2) to apply and use techniques for collecting surface sediment and suspended sediment samples, (3) to obtain water samples for biogeochemical measurements, (4) to obtain profiles of water column structure and water properties using CTD profiling, and (5) to get a first look at acoustic techniques for studying sediment stratification and structure. On each evening of the cruise, students give seminars on topics related to North Sea geology and environment or measurement and sampling techniques. The course also provides an introduction to the Ocean Data View software for data analysis and visualization. In addition to educating students, a second objective was to obtain samples of surface sediments for granulometric measurements and biogeochemical properties. This included organic carbon and nitrogen analysis and mapping the distribution of stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (15N/14N) in particles in the water column and surface sediments in the Norwegian exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This work borrows from the research project "North Sea - Assessment of Habitats" (NOAH) carried out during the last decade. The present samples will be analyzed in the near future as part of B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses.
