Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The HE618 cruise was a mandatory training course for advanced students at the IMF in the context of the master and bachelor degree programmes of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Sciences (MARSYS) at Hamburg University. During the cruise two groups of 14 students in total have been trained on frequently used fisheries science and biological oceanography methods. The course was designed according to the standards of scientific cruises and coupled to ongoing research activities of the institute. This enables the co-teaching approach, which is implemented in the MARSYS programmes, i.e., students analyse the data for their theses in close cooperation with PhD-students. The scientific teaching objective of the 2023 cruise HE618 was to investigate the late spawning activity of Western Baltic cod. For this purpose, ichthyoplankton samples were taken on a pre-defined station grid. Plankton samples were analysed with a focus on the occurrence of cod eggs and larvae. The data will be used to identify whether there is a shift towards earlier spawning activities of Western Baltic cod, and how spawning activity differs spatially between parts of the Belt Sea.
