Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Due to the bad weather forecasts for the entire German Bight, the planned departure was postponed by one day to February 21. Accompanied by two press journalists from Germany and the USA, HEINCKE departed at 7:30 a.m. on February 21st in the direction of the second wreck station of the SMS ARIADNE 20 nm west of Helgoland. HEINCKE arrived there in the afternoon and the planned scientific work (multibeam, CTD/water sampling and fishing) could be carried out. HEINCKE then steamed towards Helgoland, where it took the AWI diving team and the diving equipment on board. Around the nightly slack water from February 21 to 22, a grid was run on the wreck of SMS HELA south off Helgoland for current measurements before HEINCKE approached the wreck position of SMS MAINZ about 40 nm west of Helgoland. Multibeam was run and water samples were taken. As a preparation for the dives scheduled for the day at slack water at 1:00 p.m. two bottom weights west and east of the wreck were deployed. They were connected with lines so that the diving boat could get positioned over the wreck. As the first diver descended to the bottom, visibility was found to be less than 1 meter. The diving operation were therefore cancelled. After dismantling the moorings, the diving team was brought back to Helgoland. On 23.02. further hauls were carried out on the wreck of SMS ARIADNE and the desired fish sample size was reached. Due to the arrival of another storm, HEINCKE turned back to Bremerhaven after fishing at the SMS ARIADNE. In the late afternoon of 23.02. HEINCKE arrived in Bremerhaven.
