Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise SO300/2 was part of the BGR program for the exploration of massive sulfides in the Indian Ocean, the INDEX project, which was started in 2015 with signing an exploration contract between BGR and the International Seabed Authority. Within the INDEX project BGR carries out geological and geophysical exploration as well as environmental baseline studies on the southern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) and the northern Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR). The geological work during SO300/2 included mapping and sampling of massive sulfide sites with the Canadian ROV ROPOS, video mapping with the BGR-own TV sled STROMER, high-resolution bathymetry with BGR-own deep-towed HOMESIDE, sediment sampling using a gravity corer as well as drilling with the BGR-own, ROV-mounted Remotely Operated Coring System (ROCS). The environmental baseline studies included the recovery and re-deployment of sediment trap moorings, a baited fish camera system, (micro)biological investigations with ROV ROPOS, and sampling and analysis of hydrothermal fluids. Both exploration and environmental investigations were carried out in eight different working areas located along the entire length of the BGR license area which stretches about 1000 km along both the CIR and SEIR. In total 128 stations were realized during SO300/2.
