Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The research cruise AL600 was part of the bachelor program "Physics of the Earth System: Meteorology ? Oceanography ? Geophysics" at Kiel University. It is the field exercise for marine geophysics and hydroacoustics. The goal of the annually recurring cruise is to give students a practical insight into the acquisition, processing, analysis and interpretation of marine geophysical data. AL600 took place from August 20th ? 27th 2023, and the main study areas were Eckernforde Bay, Geltinger Bay, and Mecklenburg Bay. In Eckernforde Bay and Geltinger Bay, multibeam echo sounder (MBES) and sediment echo sounder (SES) data were collected in order to image potential groundwater seepage structures; data acquisition was complemented by CTD measurements. In Mecklenburg Bay, in addition to MBES and SES, we also employed sidescan sonar (SSS) and ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) for refraction seismics. The geophysical seafloor mapping approaches were supported by video imaging and seafloor sampling. The main aims in the Mecklenburg Bay were to investigate potential archaeological features and the search for a crater caused by a recent uncontrolled explosion of dumped ammunition.
