Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The AtlanTIC research and training cruise used the transit of RV Meteor from Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) to Walvis Bay (Namibia) to study productivity, trophic interactions and functional biodiversity of pelagic communities throughout the Atlantic Ocean and their impact on the carbon cycle. At 13 stations along the cruise track, profiles of temperature, salinity, oxygen, and fluorescence were determined by CTD casts. Water samples were collected to characterize phytoplankton communities. Depth-stratified Multinet hauls with different mesh sizes were conducted to establish the regional and vertical distribution of microplankton and mesozooplankton and to provide material for trophic biomarker analyses (fatty acids, stable isotopes). At 11 stations, Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl (IKMT) hauls provided samples of macrozooplankton and mesopelagic fishes for biochemical analyses and for a genetic reference library for species identification. In addition, Argo floats were deployed at 8 stations along the cruise track. The aim of the cruise was to understand the implications of regional differences in productivity, community structure and trophic interactions for the carbon cycle. In addition, AtlanTIC was designed as a joint capacity building initiative of the Universities of Bremen and Hamburg in their major research field ocean sciences .
