Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The Arctic Lithosphere Ocean Interactions Study (ALOIS) investigated the hydrothermal circulation at the ultraslow spreading Gakkel Ridge, Arctic Ocean. The key survey area was the Aurora vent field, where a network of ocean bottom seismometers and a mooring were recovered after one year of recording time. With robotic underwater vehicles, fluid and rock samples were collected from the vent site and with CTDs from the hydrothermal plume for microbiological analysis. We further determined the geothermal heat flow in the young crust of the Western Volcanic Zone. All measurements aimed at understanding the circulation of hydrothermal fluids through the thin crust of ultraspreading ridges and the heat supply driving this circulation. We further aimed at exploring other hydrothermal plumes along the Western Volcanic Zone of Gakkel Ridge, but severe ice conditions prevented any progress beyond 3?W on Gakkel Ridge. The survey further served as leg 2 of Polarstern cruise PS131 (ATWAICE) that investigated the inflow of Atlantic water masses to the sea ice in Fram Strait. 7 moorings were recovered along Yermak Plateau and ice stations investigation melt ponds took place in parallel to the work at Gakkel Ridge.
