Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
As one of the largest interior seas the Hudson Bay System (HuBS) is important for the freshwater budget of the Labrador Sea and western North Atlantic and thus plays an important role in deep water convection and northern hemisphere climate via interference with the thermohaline circulation. However, knowledge about the full impact of HuBS circulation changes, freshwater outflow versus Pacific and Atlantic warmer water inflow, variance in winter sea-ice conditions, and CO2 gas exchange with the atmosphere under varying climates is insufficient, particularly with respect to future consequences under global warming. Accordingly, expedition MSM120 was dedicated to water column and sediment sampling, hydroacoustic surveys and water mass chemistry, which will provide a better spatial and temporal coverage to investigate the changes in modern physical and chemical water column properties as well as in circulation in the HuBS at decadal to millennial time scales.
