Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The objective of cruise MSM115-FINWAP was a comprehensive assessment of the fin whale population using the feeding grounds along the South Shetland Islands, Elephant Island and the South Orkney Islands in Austral summer. We covered the area by a visual cetacean survey collecting sightings data along pre-designed tracklines for abundance estimation of fin whales in the survey area. Along the tracklines we sampled krill during a net trawl survey at predefined krill stations at every end and midpoint of the visual survey track lines. These data will be used for prey distribution analysis in the survey area and comparisons between whale and krill distribution. Upon encounter of large groups of fin whales we halted all survey effort to launch small boats to work with the fin whales. From the small boats we deployed satellite transmitters on fin whales to track their movements and seasonal migration, we took biopsy samples from fin whales for genetic identification and analyses of stable isoptopes and fatty acids, we deployed an acoustic recorder to record fin whale song and we collected photos for photo-identification purposes. Furthermore, we collected fecal samples for additional analyses of feeding ecology
