Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The MSM112/2 research cruise was dedicated towards the continued collection of reference data in the subtropics of the northern Atlantic along gradients of temperature and salinity. The activities had an atmospheric, an ocean-air exchange, a bathymetry and a biology component. Atmospheric activities focused on the collection of reference data for satellite remote sensing and global modeling, via sun-photometer samples, automatically recorded sky images and well-timed radiosonde releases. The ocean-atmosphere investigations involved coordinated lower atmospheric profiles (with drones) in combination with upper ocean profiles (via CTD casts), with a focus on late afternoon times, when exchange processes at the ocean surface are expected to be at their maximum. The bathymetrical effort focused on the analysis of automatically recorded sea-floor data by echosounder and parasound and the data preparation for an eventual submission to the data-base of the SeaBed 2030 initiative. In addition, seamounts near the Canary Islands were surveyed. The biology efforts focused on an examination of water samples from regular CTD casts with respect to the abundance and diversity of single celled eukaryotes (protist) in oceans and their distribution by air based on cultivation and DNA extraction. In addition, biological material floating near the surface was collected and analyzed.
