Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Due to the input of high nutient loads and phytoplankton biomass from the Elbe river, the tidal Elbe and in particular the Port of Hamburg exhibit complex nutrient turnover processes. These processes reach their maximum in the area of the Port of Hamburg. This makes the area a hotspot for the production of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. The aim of the cruise was to record, quantify and budget the nitrogen turnover processes and nitrous oxide production in the Elbe esturay and Port of Hamburg in summer. We continously measured nitrate, nitrous oxide dry mole fraction and water column properties (oxygen, pH, salinity, temperature, fluorescence and turbidity) during our cruise. Water samples were taken regulary to measure dissolved inorganic nutrient, nitrate stable isotope composition, dissolved organic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, chlorophyll a, suspended marticular matter concentration, total and inorganic particulare phosphate. We also took water samples for DNA analysis. At six stations we did incubation experiments to determine nitrification rates. We focused on the Hamburg port area as we collected water and sediment samples in four different port basins and in the southern part of the Elbe esturay. Following, various incubation experiments were done in the laboratory to study the processes of the nitrogen cycle and between the water-sediment interface. We will use our collected data to study the nitrogen turnover processes and nitrous oxide production pathways along the Elbe estuary. It is planned to compare our results to other cruises in winter, spring, and fall to identify seasonal variations.
