Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

As part of the bachelor's degree program in geophysics/oceanography at the university of Hamburg, a 'Berufs- und Seepraktikum' (internship) is carried out. The students are enabled to prepare a measuring cruise scientifically and logistically, to carry it out, to evaluate the data obtained and to communicate the results in presentations and in a report. The preparation takes place within a seminar, in which the students prepare presentations including handouts about the scientific objectives, measurement techniques used and data processing procedures. The area of interest in 2021 was a part of the North Frisian coast, centered around the island of Amrum and encompassed by the islands Sylt and Fohr, as well as the Halligen and shoals like Japsand to the south. The intent of the student excursion was to investigate the short term variability of oceanographic parameters like temperature, salinity and currents. Essentially, CTD and ADCP measurements were performed. At 3 positions, additional moorings were laid out for approx. 1 week.
