Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Due to a technical defect, FRV "Walther Herwig III" was not available for this cruise and we charted the commercial fishing vessel "Kristin" NC336 to conduct the German part of the annual ICES Baltic International Acoustic Spring Survey (BASS). "Kristin" was classified as a research vessel during the course of the survey. The main objective of this hydroacoustic survey is the annual assessment of small pelagic fish stocks, especially sprat, in the Baltic proper (SD 24-29). BASS is internationally co-ordinated by the ICES Baltic International Fish Survey Working Group (WGBIFS) where timing, surveyed area and the principal methods of investigation are discussed and agreed. The investigation area surveyed by Germany in 2021 covered ICES subdivisions 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29, and thus the majority of the total area.
