Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

MSc. And BSc. students of the study courses Marine Biotechnology and Biotechnology of Marine Resources of the University of Applied Sciences Bhv. were introduced into fundamental state of the art sampling techniques in marine biological research using ship-based methods. In the framework of their study courses content the students worked on transects starting in the Weser Estuary, leading into the German Bight to Helgoland. The students were introduced into the respective laboratory techniques. By sampling each transect twice, the data provided a coverage of tidal dynamics. The annual sampling of these transects will also contributed to ongoing research. Validated basic data sets were implemented into PANGAEA. The cruise was divided into two legs, HE 585 I (Buck, 24-27 September 2021) and HE 585 II (Koch, 28-30 September 2021). HE 585 I - Buck: On the first and fourth day, a transect was sampled from Bremerhaven to Helgoland and Helgoland to Cuxhaven, respectively. On this transect several measurements were carried out at six and five stations, respectively: (1) CTD for water parameters (salinity, depth, temperature, oxygen), (2) Nansen/Apstein net to collect plankton samples, (3) Van-Veen grab to obtain sediment samples (grain size, texture, in-fauna, etc.). All samples were analysed on board. On the second day, fishing surveys were carried out in the "Tiefen Rinne" near Helgoland using bottom trawl (20 min) and beam trawl (8 min). The first sampling was initially supported by data collection using CTD. The fish caught were analysed for species, number, size and weight, and various fishery-relevant indices. On the third day, sampling was carried out at the offshore wind farm Meerwind Sud (entry and sampling permit was provided by the operator). At two stations, data was collected by CTD and grab and plankton samples were taken. The planned use of a drone did not take place due to the strong winds. The ROV was deployed in Helgoland harbor only due to bad weather and unsuitable current conditions.
