Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The central topic of the expedition was the training of master and bachelor students from various courses in the field of marine sensor technology and bio-optics. Various methods and challenges of marine observation were considered, which are also reflected in current ICBM projects. The reason for this is to ensure that the students are confronted with leading scientific questions. Another focus was placed on the station planning, which, depending on the orientation of the different legs of the cruise, was carried out by the students. The expedition was divided into two legs, so that the number of participating students could be increased. The expedition is an integral part of the curriculum of the master's degree course Marine Sensors (marSens) at the University of Oldenburg and is directly related to the following courses: - Full: ?Aquatische Optik" (Aquatic Optics, Uni-OL code: mar961) - Full: ?Praxismodul Marine Feldforschung" (Practical module marine field research, Uni-OL code: mar951) - Partially: ?Robotik" (Robotics, Uni-OL code: mar963) - Partially: "Marine Optik" (Marine optics, Jade University of Applied Sciences) During the cruise, the hydrographical, biogeochemical and optical properties of the water column at various stations within the Natura 2000 marine reserve "Sylt Outer Reef", the areas of influence of the major adjacent rivers (especially the Elbe), the Inner German Bight and the German EEZ were examined in more detail. Properties were examined at defined stations, furthermore, hydrographic fronts were observed. Students from the University of Oldenburg - and to a lesser extent from the Jade University - were able to gain first-hand knowledge of modern biogeochemical optical sampling, measuring and recording methods. The processing and evaluation of the respective data develops and sharpens the awareness of marine environmental processes and imparts the practical methods for their implementation. Further data evaluation is considered after the cruise. This practical professional training at a high level using the latest marine technology is therefore the basis for an excellent level of training in marine sciences and marine measurement technology.
