Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The objective was to investigate the transport and remineralization rates of organic carbon in the sandy sediments and the overlying benthic boundary layer in the German Bight. By using two benthic landers for high-resolution measurements of hydrodynamics, sediment topography, benthic O2 penetration depths and O2 uptake rates, remineralization rates in the sands were determined. Measurements were made over a full tidal cycle in each case. Additionally, one of the two landers measured the abundance and composition of particulate material in bottom water by periodically filtering bottom water and taking high-frequency images using a particle camera. Complementing the lander deployments, the water column and sediment were sampled by CTD, grab, and MUC. In particular, turnover rates of O2, as well as nitrification and denitrification rates in the sands were experimentally determined. Samples for concentration profiles of pore water and solid phase were taken, and remineralization rates of readily resuspendable organic carbons were determined by means of resuspension experiments. In the water column, nutrients, O2 depletion rates, and particle abundance were determined. While the benthic landers measured small-scale topography, the large-scale topography and sediment characteristics around the stations were determined using multibeam and side-scan surveys. In this way, as planned, 6 stations were surveyed within the German Bight, selected for their different sediment properties, water depths, and nutrient concentrations. In total, the following equipment was used during the cruise: 29 CTD rosette, 32 MUC, 115 van Veen grab and 6 lander deployments, as well as 12 Multibeam and 6 SES surveys.
