Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

HE580: The Dogger Bank, a sandbank at the central North Sea is subject to the construction of four large offshore wind farm (OWF) areas. The OWF areas partly overlap with the stations of a quantitative long-term monitoring program for epifauna running yearly since 1991 with RV Senckenberg. In 2010 and 2011, two winter cruises were run on the same grid with RV Heincke, comparing summer and winter seasons. At this first of five planned cruises, multicorer-, hamon grab-, beam trawl- and ring dredge samples together with CTD profiles of the water column were taken with RV Heincke on a newly designed grid of stations at the UK part of the Dogger Bank. The main objective of this and the following cruises (if granted) is to assess benthic biodiversity before, during and after OWF construction and to compare the results with the ones of our already existing long-term monitoring project with RV Senckenberg. On cruise HE580, all our goals were fulfilled, as we were able to sample every planned station very well, not least due to good weather conditions.
