Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The research cruise HE576 was part of the MGF-North Sea pilot project (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung). Altogether six selected Natura2000 working areas located in the German North Sea were investigated during this cruise. Its main objective was to obtain hydroacoustic data, underwater videos and sediment samples in order to create new habitat maps of the seafloor. Therefore, two side-scan sonars operating with different frequencies as well as a multibeam echo sounder were used. In addition, ocean-current measurements were carried out in selected areas to obtain information about the prevailing hydrodynamics and their influence on the seafloor. For this purpose, an additional observation station was deployed on the seafloor, which continuously measured the current conditions over a period of several days. A total of six diving missions took place in working areas with a water depth < 30 m, which provided further information about the seafloor characteristics. Of particular interest during the cruise were trawl marks on the seafloor, which are produced by trawl nets used for commercial fishery. On the Dogger Bank, several traces with different characteristics and ages could be detected. Especially for this research cruise the research vessel Solea created a trawl mark on the seafloor, which was examined at different time intervals during HE576 with regard to its consistency.
