Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

he aims of the cruises are cross disciplinary pilot studies of different wreck sites in the German Bight to assess the risk deriving from munition cargo and remaining fuel. To assess the wrecks we will do bathymetry, oceanography/hydrography, marine geophysics, chemistry and marine biology, by applying e.g. multibeam/sonar techniques, sediment/water analysis, CTD, passive sampler and ROV/video missions. Further, we will do fishing and will expose mussels in cages, using remote operating lander to evaluate the biological effects of munition compounds on the health of organisms. The scientific equipment and the crew were already on board at Monday 5th April around 5 pm. Due to very bad weather conditions in the whole southern German Bight, ship stayed in Bremerhaven port. Sailing of the vessel was postponed until Thursday 08th April 6 am. The arrival was at 2 pm at Thursday 08th April at the wreck position of the SMS Mainz in an area north of the island of Borkum. There, the sea state with 3.5 m wave hight and 7 Bft. Wind speeds allowed only the deployment of multibeam scanner and sub-bottom profiler. During Friday the weather calmed down and at the afternoon slackwater the first check dive to the wreck was possible. At Saturday the weather condition were fine and all planned activities (CTD, water sampling, sediment grabber, deployment of lander, fishing and conduction of two dives) could be done. After the last dive in the early evening, last scans were conducted before Heincke left the position to deploy a last lander at a reference side within the area of Borkum Riffgrund (ca. 10:30 pm). At Sunday 11th April at around 11 am Heincke was back at Bremerhaven Fischkai. There a 3 Hrs press event under the supervision of AWI and DSM press department with several different media teams was conducted. At 6:30 pm expedition and press event were over.
