Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Aims of the Cruise The educational cruise HE571 was conducted by the working group Biology of Geological Processes of the ICBM at the University of Oldenburg. Plankton dynamics together with the controlling hydrographic conditions in the German Bight should be investigated. Therefore, a fixed grid of stations covering the German Bight should be sampled using the RV HEINCKE. This grid has been visited in spring every year since 2000. By this work the students should be introduced and gain practical experience in important methods and approaches in Biological Oceanography on board of a research vessel and later in the home labs. The students of a marine degree programme should a) get in touch with the scientific work on a research vessel in general, b) learn the way of sampling and measurements of a variety of different parameters on board and c) to have the unique opportunity to analyse their own samples subsequently in the lab. The intense learning effect of our course leads to a better understanding of sampling, of the applied methods, analyses and approaches in Biological Oceanography in the field of practical and interdisciplinary education. This training cruise is rather unique in Bachelor programs in the field of marine sciences at German universities. The following parameters should be sampled or recorded: All data of the CTD (pressure, depth, temperature, salinity, fluorescence, oxygen concentration as well as the transmission), the Secchidepth, zoo- and phytoplankton (hand net hauls), phytoplankton abundance, bacterial cell numbers and concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM), of inorganic nutrients (phosphate, silicate), of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phaeopigments. The entire data set will yield insights into the plankton dynamic of different groups of organisms within the expected spring bloom and its dependence of several (hydrographical) factors compared to recorded data of previous years and the current literature. For Agenda of the Cruise, Usual program of the educational Cruise, Modified program due to Corona crisis and detailed Narrative of the Cruise please see the official cruise report: http://doi.org/10.48433/cr_he571
