Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The cruise aimed to collect fish samples as close as possible to munition dumpsites in the Baltic Sea. target areas were the munition dumpsite at Kolberger Heide in Kiel bay and the areas Haftkrug and Pelzer Haken in the Lubeck Bay. Samples were investigated on ship for fish diseases and tissue and body fluid samples were collected for laboratory measurements of munition compounds that may leak out from corroding munition shells. Specifically, we attempted to collect flat fish, in particular common dab with bottom gill nets. Before the nets were placed over night, a CTD measurement was performed to confirm the presence of oxygen near the seafloor. At Pelzer Haken at sites deeper 15m, oxygen was lacking and bottom gill nets could not be placed. In total 76 flounders (Platichthys flesus), 70 dab (Limanda limanda) and 35 plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) were investigated. Only dab were sampled for bile fluid, muscle and liver tissue and otoliths. At Kolberger Heide 13% of investigated dab had liver anomalies, compared to 6% in the corresponding control area.
