Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

AL564:The main purpose of the ALKOR cruise AL564 was hands-on training of students in observational techniques applied by physical oceanographers. The students who participated in the cruise attend the module "Measurement Methods of Oceanography" which is offered in the Bachelor program "Physics of the Earth System" at CAU Kiel. During AL564 cruise the students were instructed in instrument calibration and also in interpreting observational data they acquired. Besides, the students had the opportunity to experience working and "living" at sea and to explore and study the impact of physical processes in the western Baltic Sea, the sea at their doorstep. Repeate hydrography and current sections across the Fehmarn Belt show well the short time scales where significant changes occur. Re-deployment of a bottom shield mooring reveals the variability of currents in the water column and near-bottom temperature, salinity and oxygen in the Fehmarnbelt area. AL564 also surveyed the Boknis Eck area on a one day mission with tests of equipment and high resolution CTD time series data.
