Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Investigating the impact of bottom-trawling on morphological, geochemical and biological parameters. Target areas are the Oderbank and Fehmarn Belt Area, southern Baltic Sea The cruise was carried out over two weeks and is a part of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Ferderal Ministry of Education and Research (BMMF) to investigate the expected impact of the exclusion of mobile bottom fishing in marine protected areas of the Baltic Sea. This is also a pilot project of the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM) (DAM Pilot Mission - Protected Areas Baltic Sea, FKZ: 03F0848A). The basic aim of the cruise is to obtain a comprehensive overview inside and outside the marine protected area (MPA) Oderbank, with following focal points: 1) biological sediment communities (key players, diversity and activity in prokaryotes, protists, meiofauna, macrozoobenthos), 2) sediment biogeochemical composition and activity, 3) the variability of the different components in a sandy sediment enviroment and 4) sediment-water interface fluxes. Another cruise aim was to repeat acoustic mapping in the Fehmarnbelt to investigate dynamics of trawling marks (repeating the sampling for other components in Fehmarnbelt) was not possible due to restrictions caused by pandemic and military manures. Due to the COVID-19 restriction, the cruise was divided into two sections (Leg 1 and Leg 2), with crew exchange on 11.06.2021 in Rostock.
