Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The Purpose of cruise EMB262 was to collect geological, hydrographic and biological samples for the reconstruction of phytoplankton communities and populations under respective environmental conditions throughout the holocene history of the Baltic Sea, (1) Bornholm Basin, (2) Eastern Gotland Basin, (3) Gulf of Finland and (GoF4), Landsort Deep. Short cores were successfully retrieved by Multicorer (MUC) from all sites. Due to difficult weather conditions long cores could only be collected by gravity corer (GC) from Eastern Gotland Basin and GoF. To identify suitable sediment conditions for coring, sediment acustics surveys were performed in GoF prior sampling. Several of the collected sediment cores were immediately subsampled onboard for geochemical analyses, DNA and phytoplankton resting stages. At the 4 sediment stations, extensive water column sampling was performed using the CTD Rosette sampler and Pump CTD to measure hydrochemical and hydrographic parameters and collect material for molecular biomarker analyses. Phytoplankton, DNA and Chla samples were collected to establish reference condtions for sediment records. In addition to the 4 main sediment sampling sites, 12 stations were sampled for water column parameters to substatiate references at different environmental conditions in the different investigated parts of the Baltic Sea. Generally, sampling was compromised by rough weather, forcing the ship to seek shelter repeatedly for several days. Thus, we were not able to get into the Bothnian Sea and employ the GC at Landsort Deep.
