Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

OBJECTIVES AND BRIEF NARRATIVE OF CRUISE The cruise SO285 is the second field-campaign of the BMBF-funded joint project TRAFFIC with the overall aim to explore climate change impacts on ecosystem structure and function, as well as on associated ecosystem services such as fisheries, and the sequestration of CO2 in the Benguela Upwelling System (BUS). In contrast to the first TRAFFIC cruise with RV Meteor (M153) during the austral summer/autumn in 2019, the cruise SO285 covers the austral winter/spring of the year 2021 in order to capture ecosystem responses to seasonal varying physical forces. Hence, understanding the seasonality is seen as a key to achieve the TRAFFIC goals. In order to study ecosystem structure and function as well as services in the BUS, the cruises M153 and SO285 conducted research between 20? - 32?S and 10 – 18?E and focussed thereby on two station grids, one off Namibia (NBUS: 20? - 23?S and 10?E – coastline) and a second one off South Africa (SBUS: 28?- 32?S, 13?E – coastline) However, the COVID pandemic strongly affected the design and conduct of the cruise SO285. This begun with Emden, Germany as port of embarkation and disembarkation which caused a transit time of approximately two times three weeks and a request from the PIRATA (Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic)-program to recover two of their observing buoys in the South Atlantic Ocean. These buoys cut loose from their anchors and were free-drifting close to our track into the working area. In the working area the following tasks were on our agenda: ? Underway measurements of greenhouse gases and associated parameters ? Shipboard measurements of the EK80 echo sounder to obtain information on vertical distribution of plankton and nekton organisms of different size classes, ? Recovery and deployment of sediment trap moorings and drifters ? Deployment of five ARGO-floats and one BIO-ARGO-float ? Regular station work along eight transects mostly perpendicular to the coast which included the application of eight different gears (CTD including a SEASCAN SUNADeep Nitrate Sensor and an Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP), Apstein Net, three different MultiNets, Neuston Catamaran, Rectangular Mid-Water Trawl, rod fishing)
