Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The purpose of cruise M178 was to conduct a repeated mapping and surveying offshore Europe's largest active volcano Mt Etna. To identify changes of the geological, volcanological and sedimentary setting a combination of different methods like hydroacoustics and sediment sampling was used. After a 10 days transit from Emden to Sicily, we mapped we mapped the entire continental margin off the large volcano edifice by means of multibeam- and Parasound echo-soundings. In order to assess the shallow sedimentary succession at the continental margin and its intra-slope basins, we collected several gravity cores. The cores host an archive of hemi-pelagic sedimentation regimes, tephra deposition and syn-, as well as, post tectonic deformation patterns. During the cruise, we recovered the marine geodesy stations, which had been deployed during SO277. The system was maintained and re-deployed at the same sites again. After 9 days offshore Mt Etna, we left on a 7 day transit to the volcanic island of La Palma in the Canary archipelago. Due to permit restrictions, we were not able to conduct a planned multibeam survey and hence continued our work off La Palma with a CTD transect. On 19th Decemeber, we arrived in the port of Las Palmas.
