Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Understanding the opening of the Bay of Biscay and the associated kinematics of the Iberian plate during the late Cretaceous. Applied methods during M176 included bathymetric mapping with the ships own EM 122 multi-beam echo sounder (plus minor PARASOUND sediment echo soundings during transits) and rock sampling by means of chain bag dredges. Sampled structures included the Charcot and La Coru?a seamount complexes, the entire Azores-Biscay Rise and the seamounts province north of it. Dredge hauls were conducted between 40?42' N and 46?13'N and 21?29'W and 13?03W. Age determinations and geochemical investigations of the recovered rock samples will allow us to test the different models regarding the opening of the Bay of Biscay and the origin of the Azores-Biscay Rise as well as the possible role of a mantle plume in this area during the opening of the North Atlantic.
