Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

PS122.2 (or Leg 2) was the midwinter leg of the international Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC). It comprised two voyages on board the Russian supply icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn from Troms? to the Polarstern and back, with a total length of seven weeks, and an eleven week long observational period and drift on board the Polarstern, from December 13, 2019, to March 6, 2020. The supply voyages were the northernmost known ship operations ever performed in the Arctic during winter. The drift of the Polarstern was the northernmost known winter drift of a surface vessel ever, and reached a position of 88?36'N, 59?15'E, on Feb 24, 2020, only 84 nautical miles from the North Pole. During the drift of the Polarstern the comprehensive, interdisciplinary measurements of atmosphere, ice, ocean, and ecosystem properties and processes were continued and extended from Leg 1, above, in, and under the ice. The unprecedented observational program was very successful and delivered on all goals despite the continuous darkness of the polar night and some of the coldest conditions experienced during MOSAiC. Together with the continued measurements during all other legs these observations will lay the foundation for adequately improving climate models to pave the way for a better understanding and prediction of Arctic and global climate change.
