Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Short cruise report HE-531 This oceanographic and marine geoscience excursion is a key element of the HGF graduate school POLMAR (AWI), part of the undergraduate education at the Jacobs University Bremen ("Earth and Environmental Sciences") and part of the master program of Environmental Physics at the university of Bremen. The course provided the students an excellent opportunity to gain some practical hands-on experience. They were able to put to test various theories they had learned during their lectures and on board. They learned basics of marine geology, physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, biological oceanography (plankton und benthos) and marine geophysics. The cruise also supported and fostered team work as they had to process and interpret the acquired data together. The last day of each leg was planned and run by the students. The weather and sea conditions were, except for fog on April 30, very good and nobody became real seasick. During the evaluations we received very positive replies. Leg 1 (POLMAR & Jacobs students; April 24-27): Embarking 7:00 on April 24. Leaving Bremerhaven at 8:00. After the safety drill, the first day was mostly used to set up and explain the equipment. While steaming, several lectures were given. The following day was spent at sea and the students learned how to work on a scientific vessel. On stations the equipment was deployment and demonstrated. At the end of the second day the students prepared a cruise plan which they ran the next day. In the morning of April 27 a geological excursion was organized on Helgoland. Afterwards, the students presented the results from their cruise day. These were discussed until 14:30 when they left the ship and took the ferry back to Cuxhaven at 16:00. Leg 2 (POLMAR & Jacobs students April 27- May 1): The students arrived with the ferry to Helgoland at 12:30. After delivering their luggage to the Mielckhaus, they embarked and were given a tour of the ship. At 3PM we left the harbor, followed by safety instructions. We explained part of the equipment, ran one station and returned to the harbor. The following days were spent at sea where the students learned how to work on a scientific vessel. On stations the equipment was deployment and demonstrated. While steaming, several lectures were given. In the evening of April 29 the students prepared a cruise plan which they ran the next day. In the morning of May 1 a geological excursion was organized on Helgoland, after which the labs were cleaned and the students presented the results from their cruise day. These were discussed until 14:30 when we disembarked and took the 4PM ferry to Cuxhaven. Leg 3 (Environmental physics students Mai 1 - 5): This leg as a course in the Uni Bremen Program in Environmental Physics was new this year. The students as well as several instructors arrived by ferry at 12:30 on Helgoland. They brought their items to the Mielckhaus and entered the ship thereafter. We showed them around the ship and left port at 15:00. The security instruction followed and the first gears were subsequently used. On May 2, we left port at 8:00 and were back at 16:30. The typical data acquisition at sea was demonstrated to the students and the gears CTD, multi net, LOKI, box corer, and multi corer were demonstrated. It was unclear whether the weather would permit to go out on May 4. Therefore, on the evening of May 2 the students planned the time table for May 3. Hence, we left port at 8:00 on May 3, performed the students' program and were back in port at 16:30. On May 4, a geological excursion around Helgoland was organized and in the afternoon, a small number of stations were occupied. The remainder of the day was spent on data processing and analysis. On May 5, two further stations were occupied and then the transit back to Bremerhaven was started. The cruise ended at 16:00 at AWI building A.
