Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The RV Sonne science cruise SO268-3 from Vancouver, Canada to Singapore involved two projects: MICRO-FATE and MORE-2. MICRO-FATE investigated the distribution of plastic in oceans, from large accumulations down to decayed and degraded microstructures. Its goal is to capture for the northern Pacific near 30N, where larger litter surface concentrations are reported, longitudinal and vertical distributions of plastics. In total 9 stations explored vertical distributions down to ocean depths of more than 5000 m. At the first 8 stations also the ocean floor was viewed with an underwater camera and sediment samples were taken to explore deposits. MORE-2 sampled reference data for greenhouse gases, aerosol and clouds over oceans in support of satellite remote sensing (and) modeling. Hydroacoustic data of the ocean floor were prepared for SEABED 2030 and 21 Argo floats were deployed.
