Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The course was constructed around the close cooperation with the University of Gdansk combining work at sea with work on Hel beaches. To fully appreciate the structure a table can be found in the appendix of this report. On board of Elisabeth Mann Borgese labs were equipped for the analysis of chlorophyll, oxygen, and nutrients. Moreover, equipment for pore water extraction was available and for sieving of fauna from the sediments. By means of the data generated with the methods available it was possible to measure primary production, calculate nutrient concentrations in the water column and fluxes of nutrients of pore waters to overlying waters. Other projects used sample material collected on the beaches and in shallow biotopes like sea grass meadows and reed stands. Marcofauna was collected and a focus was on sand hoppers living in macroflora remains of the beach. The fauna and phytoplankton was studied and quantified on the field stations with microscopes. Five student projects were identified that used subsets of the overall data generated. The foci were clearly distinct and all data generated were used. Moreover, cross-sharing of information was encouraged.
