Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Cruise EMB205 (Fig. 3.1) is a repetition of the cruise EMB188 (2018), to obtain a common, calibrated acoustic dataset at different seasons. Systematic execution of field surveys ship-based acoustic systems will allow to measure the currently unknown impact of Baltic Sea seafloor macrofauna communities of selected, continuously ground-truthed key habitats on small-scale (mm to cm scale) roughness parameters, multi-angular and multi-frequency acoustic scatter strength as well as volume scatter strength. Combined with laboratory-based modelling approaches of acoustic scatter, this will allow to establish habitat-specific procedures to achieve maximum discriminatory power of remote sensing datasets to identify and monitor seafloor habitats and to determine the seasonal dynamics of acoustic backscatter depending on organisms lifecycle. Specifically, we pursued the following objectives during the requested ship time onboard Elisabeth Mann Borgese: 1. Determine frequency-specific visibility of macrobenthic organisms and traces in very-high frequency acoustic scatter data 2. Determine seasonal dynamics of backscatter depending on organism lifecycle in different habitats For a detailed cruise narrative, refer to the Cruise Report.
