Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The research cruise HE539 was executed in the frame of the research project AMIN (Acoustic sea bed classification of the North Sea – Sediment dynamics in the farshore environments). It is a joint project between the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in List on Sylt, the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel (Institute of Geosciences), the Senckenberg-Institute am Meer Wilhelmshaven (Marine Sedimentology), the Leibnitz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemunde (Marine Geology) and the Bundesamt fur Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH). The project aims on area-wide hydroacoustic sediment distribution mapping (including hard substrates) in the German Bight. The provided maps are much more accurate and detailed than existing maps. During the cruise, several hydroacoustic devices were deployed within two different survey areas east of the Dogger Bank (Nordschillgrund) within German territorial waters. All hydroacoustic data were ground-truthed by taking sediment samples and underwater videos. The measurements revealed that the study areas are dominated by smooth fine sand. Numerous traces of trawling could be detected. In the study area in the Northwest, small reefs consisting of hard substrates were spotted. Moreover, three sediment cores were taken in the vicinity of Helgoland (SE North Sea).
