Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The aim of HE 543 (master course biogeochemistry; University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven) was to teach biogeochemical methods and research strategies and to show the river influence on element fluxes as reflected by nutrient concentrations, primary productivity and organo-chemical parameters in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Based on onboard laboratory analyses, the student participants studied nutrient fluxes in the Elbe and Weser estuaries and their relation to tide, primary production, oxygen availability, turbidity and concentration of organic matter. These analyses were compared with depth-dependent results in the open North Sea and with literature data. During the three days of the expedition, a total of 19 stations were sampled. On Oct. 7th 2019, the onboard labs were prepared in the harbor of Bremerhaven. After departure at 8:00 a.m., we started sampling a transect at Blexen Reede in the River Weser towards Helgoland with a total of 7 CTD stations. On the second day, additional 8 stations were sampled around the Island of Helgoland. At one station an exploratory box coring was carried out. The third day followed the transect back to Bremerhaven during which only 4 stations were sampled due to the weather conditions. All stations were sampled with the water rosette and the CTD device. Inorganic nutrients, oxygen and solid phase extraction were carried out onboard in the chemistry lab. DOC and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and suspended matter (SPM) analyses will be carried out back in the labs of the University and the Alfred Wegener Institute. The results demonstrated the river influence on the lateral and vertical physico-chemistry. Nutrient regimes changed, for example, in accordance with SPM concentration, DOC/DON ratios and oxygen concentration. In summary, we entirely reached the methodological aims of this biogeochemical teaching course.
