Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
HE542: FS Heincke cruise HE 542 from 1st October – 3rd October 2019 scientifically led by Prof. B. H. Buck started in Bremerhaven and ended in Cuxhaven (Germany). The day of preparation was September 30th 2019. On day 1 (1st October 2019) RV Heincke followed a transect from Bremerhaven to Helgo-land. On this transect five stations were sampled. Water masses were characterized using the CTD device (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth, Oxygen). The water rosette was used to sample water from at least two different depths with the water column at the "Tiefe Rinne" station. Nansen and Apstein net hauls were applied to sample pelagic plankton. The Van-Veen grabber was deployed to sample surface sediments which were analysed for benthic organisms, sediment configuration, and grain size. The water samples, which were taken on the first section of the cruise, were filtered and frozen for later investigations of hepatitis back in the lab of the University of Applied Sciences in Bremerhaven. Sediment and infauna samples were primarily analysed on-board. On the second day (2nd October 2019), exploratory fishing was carried out in the region of the "Tiefe Rinne" near Helgoland. For this investigation beam and bottom trawls were car-ried out. The first fishery action was accompanied with CTD sampling. The collected fish was taxonomically determined, counted, and measured with respect to size and weight as well as other fishery relevant parameters. On the third day (3rd October 2019) samples were taken within the offshore wind farm ?Meerwind Sud"(Operator: WindMW). A permit/approval to sail in and out as well as to take samples (data of entry/exit as well as coordinates of sample area) was obtained in advance and provided to the captain of RV Heincke. CTD, plankton and sediment samples were taken (similar to day one). After the sampling was finished the cruise track went from the offshore wind farm back to Bremerhaven. The planned use of a drone did not take place due to the strong winds. The cruise was solely educational (students of the University of Applied Sciences Bremerha-ven). The aim of the cruise was to focus within the first part on marine biology and the influ-ence of the river Weser on physico-chemical parameters and on invertebrate and fish biodi-versity.
