Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

RV SONNE cruise SO264 took place in the framework of the BMBF joint project "SONNE-EMPEROR", led by GEOMAR and AWI. The program included sediment sampling with TV-MUC and GKG for surface sediments, PC, GC, and BC for the recovery of long sediment sequences. The closely-spaced sediment core transect between ~30?N and ~50?N along ~170?E crossed major oceanographic and climatic features in the N Pacific. The program was complemented by a plankton and water sampling program between 7?N and 50?N. We applied MSM, CTD/rosette deployments, and on-track water pumping. Extended bathymetric (EM177) and sediment echosounding (PARASOUND) surveys were carried out. The cruise started in Suva (Fiji) on June 30, 2018. After 54 working days and a total of 183 deployments and bathymetric/sediment echosounding survey, portcall was on August 23, 2018 in Yokohama (Japan). SO264 gathered a suite of closely-spaced high-quality sediment cores from the so far largely unexplored offshore, pelagic N Pacific ocean areas, which are rather unaffected by land-near processes and hence, more reliable for ocean climate model assessment. The geological program comprised 54 multicorer (MUC) deployments, 40 gravity corers (GC), 20 piston corers (PC), 5 box corers (Kasten, KAL) corers, and 3 giant box corers (GKG). We retrieved ca. 640 m of sediment cores (except MUC, pilot cores, and GKG). The geological program was complemented by an intense plankton and water sampling program between 7?N and 50?N, which served in combination with the sampling of sediment surface samples to evaluate, calibrate and further establish proxy parameters used in paleoceanography. We applied MSM (multiple closing net), CTD/rosette deployments, and on-track water pumping. We ran 18 CTD/rosettes and 43 multinets. Extended bathymetric (EM177) and sediment echosounding (PARASOUND) surveys were carried out in the working area in order to identify coring locations in the mountainous regions of the Emperor seamounts. Bathymetric mapping covered ~78.017 km2 during the transit from Suva to the study area, ~55.960 km2 on the Emperor Seamount Chain, and ~44.993 km2 during the back transit from the last station to the beginning of the Japanese EEZ. In total, we mapped 178.970 km2.
