Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Expedition M143 SLOGARU aims to investigate possible areas of recent slope failure and mass transport deposits along the shallow part of the Black Sea margin in the Danube Delta by bathymetry mapping and water column observation. Wide-spread gas emissions from the seafloor have been reported from previous expeditions to this region, but gas emission rates were never estimated. Therefore a calibrated 38 kHz echosounder was newly mounted to the moonpool of the vessel to acquire high resolution water column data combined with EM710 multibeam data to estimate gas emission volumes from several regions in the Danube Delta, After departure on December 12, we started data acquisition for the purpose of multibeam mapping soon after crossing the border to Romanian waters. The newly installed 38 kHz echo sounder was first deployed in the morning of Wednesday, December 13 and calibrated. Three sub-regions in different waters were visited to acquire coincident EM710 multibeam and EK80 single beam data. The gas flare imaging was completed on Friday morning, December 15. After a short transit, we then mapped a region (~470 km2) close to the Ukrainian border to complete the multibeam bathymetric coverage of the Danube Delta region. During this survey, we also acquired PARASOUND sub bottom profiler data along a total of 800 line kilometres.
