Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

During Laser 2017 (first part of the experiment) a new aquired Laser Communication Terminal (LCT) has been tested onboard RV ELISABETH MANN BORGESE. This test was carried out at three defined ship positions in the western Baltic Sea with different distances to the coast and under different current conditions. This measurements were done in conjunction to CTD measurements, light attenuation measurements using a WETLabs AC 9 plus, Secchi-disk measurements and an Underwater Laser Scanner (ULS). One objective was to study the bit error rate of the LCT under diffrent environmental conditions and the effect of water turbidity on communication quality. During the Engineering Trial Geo 2017 (the second part of the experiment) a new scanning sonar was tested in the ripple field northern the Island Fehmarn in the Fehmarn Belt. The scanning sonar was deployed at Pos 03 (LAT 54?34,38'N LON 011?03,47'E) on October 08th and was operated at different frequencies. Furtheron a new O2 titration laboratory device was used during this part of the cruise to train the scientific personnel by the Winkler method. In addition an introduction was given by experts of the IOW in the operation of the CTD-Seabird with a water sample device, the multibeam echosounder and the sediment sonar used onboard RV ELISABETH MANN BORGESE.
