Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Heincke HE488: Satellite remote sensing of the sea surface is an important tool to determine water constituents, like chlorophyll a as an indicator for phytoplankton biomass. The HZG- remote sensing group was responsible for the operational algorithms to determine water constituents in coastal waters from data of MERIS on the ESA satellite ENVISAT. The group is now responsible for the same algorithms for the MERIS successor OLCI on SENTINEL-3 (Start End of 2014) and that for the German hyperspectral satellite ENMAP (Start 2017). The cruise is necessary for the first validation of remote sensing data of Sentinel-3 for chlorophyll, suspended matter, and Gelbstoff, and for tests of validation measurements for ENMAP. Further to determine the areal distribution of the different water constituents in the North Sea, as well as their optical characteristics, using newest optical methods.
