Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

HE480:During the research cruise HE480 we conducted the annual sampling of the long-term research program. Further, we used ship time for studying spatial variability of benthic communities in the German Bight. On the one side, we studied for the first time small scale variability of benthos (within 50m – 1km) in the area of Sylt outer reef, based on side scan sonar records of sediment variability. On the other side, macrozoobenthic individuals were collected for the investigation of trophic interactions and trophic structure of different benthic communities. The results will deliver new knowledge on the spatial distribution of trophic processes and thus the spatial modelling of food web structures in the German exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The program of the cruise comprised sampling of soft-bottom in- and epifauna, as well as demersal fish fauna with van Veen grab, beam trawl and otter trawl, respectively, and the determination of sedimentological parameters, as well as phytoplankton samples (only 2 stations in the outer German EEZ). At each of four benthic ecological long-term stations five sediment samples were taken with a 0.1 m2 van Veen grab to analyse the local benthic infaunal communities. The samples were sieved through a 500 ?m sieve. A sixth sample was taken to analyse local sedimentological parameters and the bottom temperature was measured. The retained organisms were fixed in 4 % BORAX-buffered formalin. Quantitative (abundance, biomass) taxonomical and sedimentological analysis of the samples will be conducted in the AWI laboratory after the cruise. At each ecological long-term station epifauna was sampled with a 3 m beam trawl (mesh size: 1 cm) which was trawled for ~10 min at a speed of 2-3 knots. Epifauna was directly identified, counted and weighted on board. At the long-term station FSD, demersal fish was sampled with an otter trawl (15 m opening, towed for ~30 min). Species were sorted, taxonomically identified, counted and weighted. 20 organisms of whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and dab (Limanda limanda) were stored frozen for further inspection of parasites. At two stations in the outer German EEZ, trophic structure of the benthic system, including water samples as the food base, infauna, epfauna, and demersal fish, was studied. At both station, 15 0.1 m? van Veen grabs were taken, sieved over 1000 ?m to pick animals alive in the lab of Heincke. Epifauna was sampled with a 3 m beam trawl (mesh size: 1 cm) which was trawled for 10 min at a speed of 2-3 knots. Demersal fish was sampled with an otter trawl (15 m opening, 20 min). The organisms from trawled gears were determined immediately onboard, counted and weighed. The species from all three gears were picked alive and frozen at -30?C for further analysis at the AWI. Sediment samples and filtered seawater samples (three of each at both stations) were taken to analyse phytoplankton and detritus for further processing in the lab. At 15 stations ordered along three transects, three 0.1m? van Veen grabs were taken. Station locations were chosen according to side-scan sonar records and sediment maps (provided by Svenja Papenmeier, AWI). Each transect covers a sedimentological gradient ranging from gravel and very coarse sand to fine sand. Samples were sieved over 1000 ?m and the retained organisms were fixed in 4 % BORAX-buffered formalin. From each grab small amounts of sediment samples were taken. Quantitative (abundance, biomass) taxonomical and sedimentological analysis of the samples will be conducted in the AWI laboratory after the cruise. Further, six epifaunal samples per transect were taken with a 3 m beam trawl and organisms were determined, counted and weighted immediately onboard. In addition to the originally program we quantified anthropogenic litter caught with the beam trawl at each station and used the transitions between the benthos stations for counting floating anthropogenic litter items at the sea surface.
